Lessons from history: how we beat inflation in the 1970s - now can we do it again?
Thursday Mar 31, 2022
Thursday Mar 31, 2022
War raging, the world order being challenged, huge amounts of government spending, an energy crisis and inflation spiralling out of control. No, we're not talking about 2022, we're talking about the 1970s.
The events of the 70s and the devastating social and economic fallout are being compared to what might happen now, but is it relevant?
In this show, Keith Wade, Schroders Chief Economist, takes us through the events of a tumultuous decade. From the bad decisions that led to a brutal recession, to how it shapes economic theory decades later, and, ultimately, if it still matters in 2022.
RUNNING ORDER:
01:22 - Part one: The coming storm
12:23 - Part two: How inflation was tamed
16:41 - Part three: Lessons learned from the 1970s and are they relevant now

Sanctions or the Fed: what’s driving demand for gold and is it sustainable?
Tuesday Mar 22, 2022
Tuesday Mar 22, 2022
The gold price approached all time highs $2050 an ounce just after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Since then it has fall back to around $1,930, a range it’s been in since the early days of the pandemic.
Because events around the world are moving so fast and policy makers are beginning to take steps to combat inflation, we thought it would be a good idea to touch base again with fund manager and commodities specialist James Luke, to find out what exactly is going on.
Running order:
02;00 - Part one: The Russian sanctions boosting gold demand
08:36 - Part two: Ukraine crisis vs Fed interest rate hikes: what's driving demand for gold?
18:09 - Part three: Gold equities and the potential for negative shocks

Should we question the Fed’s outlook?
Thursday Mar 17, 2022
Thursday Mar 17, 2022
Lisa Hornby, Head of US Multi-Sector Fixed Income at Schroders, thinks the Fed’s outlook is “very, very optimistic”.
The US central bank, the Federal Reserve (Fed), has laid out an aggressive plan for interest rate rises before the end of the year. At the same time they expect inflation to fall to 4% from over 7% by the end of 2022, and growth to remain well above 2%.
Lisa joins Ron Insana, Senior Advisor to Schroders and CNBC contributor, to discuss the Fed’s announcement and what it means for investors and the economy.
